Run multiple instances of Web Captioner simultaneously

You can run multiple instances of Web Captioner simultaneously by starting additional instances of Google Chrome.

Note: You won't be able to run multiple instances of Web Captioner only by opening a new tab or window. If you try this, Web Captioner will only work in the frontmost tab or window. This is because of a limitation in Google Chrome.

  1. Windows
  2. MacOS

Windows

  1. Go to the Start Menu and open PowerShell.
  2. Copy and paste this into PowerShell: Start-Process chrome -ArgumentList "--user-data-dir=$(echo $env:TEMP/$(Get-Random)) https://webcaptioner.com/captioner"
  3. Press enter.

This command will open Google Chrome with a fresh, temporary profile, so you won't see any saved bookmarks or history, and when you close this instance, you won't have any saved settings.

If you would like to save settings in this extra instance, change the command to something like this:

Start-Process chrome -ArgumentList "--user-data-dir=$(echo $env:TEMP/extra-chrome-profile-for-web-captioner) https://webcaptioner.com/captioner"

If you would like to create a shortcut that you can click on to run this command, do this:

  1. Go to your desktop or another folder
  2. Right click > New > Shortcut
  3. Type powershell.exe and click Next
  4. Give it a name like "New Web Captioner Instance"
  5. Click Finish
  6. Right click on the file and go to Properties > Shortcut tab
  7. Change Target to this:

    powershell.exe -Command "Start-Process chrome -ArgumentList \"--user-data-dir=$(echo $env:TEMP/extra-chrome-profile-for-web-captioner) https://webcaptioner.com/captioner\""

  8. Click OK

MacOS

  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Copy and paste this into Terminal: open -na "Google Chrome" --args --user-data-dir=$(mktemp -d) https://webcaptioner.com/captioner
  3. Press enter.

This command will open Google Chrome with a fresh, temporary profile, so you won't see any saved bookmarks or history, and when you close this instance, you won't have any saved settings.

If you would like to save settings in this extra instance, change the command to something like this:

open -na "Google Chrome" --args --user-data-dir=$HOME/extra-chrome-profile-for-web-captioner --app https://webcaptioner.com/captioner

If you would like to create a shortcut to this, download and run this bash script.
